A MAN insulted paramedics after calling an ambulance because of severe chest pains following a row with his wife.

Paul Dixon, 50, of Radstock Way, Merstham, pleaded guilty at Redhill Magistrates' Court to using insulting or threatening behaviour on May 2.

Fahmina Islam, prosecuting at last Thursday's hearing, said: "He sat in the rear of the ambulance, swearing and shouting and punching his fist into his hand.

"He shouted 'If someone is after me I'm going to kill them first. I'm not going to ****ing hospital.' "

She said staff hit the emergency button in the ambulance and the defendant carried on ranting and punching his fist into his hand.

One paramedic was concerned for her safety and that of her colleagues.

During the hearing Dixon said he had been having marital problems. His wife had come round to his home and he had become stressed. He suffered from angina. He had also been drinking that day.

Bench chairman Tony Stockhouse said: "You were in drink and the ambulance crew were public servants, but we have taken into account your early guilty plea."

Dixon was fined £50 and ordered to pay £50 costs and £15 towards a fund for the victims of crime.
