THE speed of a dual carriageway road between Dorking and Leatherhead has been reduced from 70mph to 50mph.

The change has been made on the stretch between the Denbies roundabout and Swanworth Lane after years of campaigning by local residents.

Speaking after Surrey County Council's local committee meeting on Wednesday, councillor Hazel Watson (Lib Dem, Dorking Hills) said: "I am very pleased that it has finally been reduced. It was a fantastic campaign by the local community who put together a petition and presented it to the local committee."I do feel that the reduced speed limit was long overdue, there had been too many deaths and serious injures on that stretch of road and I hope that the accident rate will now improve and it will be safer."

“A ruse by Surrey County Council.

By dropping the speed limit, they can wriggle their way out of resurfacing the road to a standard which can support it.

    Moreover deploy more scamera vans.”

“Found out about this whilst travelling down the A24 today, the single carriageway stretch from upto mickleham was 50mph and the stretch from the boxhill roundabout to denbies was 40mph. As far as i can see all that's been done is a hazzard free dual carriageway has now been ruined, the 50mph limit will cause more frustration for users held up or wanting to make progress from the single carriageway and the place to make progress has now been taken away from them.”

“I agree about the surface drainage. However, it is all being re surfaced for the Olympic Cycle Race so that might help. Let's hope it does as it will make it worth while rather than a massive waste of money just for 2 days of cycling.”

“Will the council also be addressing the poor surface drainage on that section? Even a small amount of rain results in large puddles, especially on the stretch from Mickleham to Burford Bridge.”

“This is going to make no difference what so ever. Those who speed, will still speed. The amount will just be more for a conviction. The change will cause problems as people will drive in the outside lane at 50 or less and those wanting to speed going up too close behind them causing accidents. You only have had to listen the last few nights at engines screaming by (particularly motor bikes). The only way speeding is going to stop is by having police patrols and/or mobile speed cameras so people don't take the chance to speed as they may get caught. The lack of crossing options is also a problem no matter what the speed. You see people every weekend crossing at the Stepping Stones over to Denbies. Another other problem is people do not move over at slip roads to allow traffic out, so people take chances. A driver would pull over at a motorway slip, but on the A24 not so. Some accidents that happen at the Burford Bridge roundabout are about speed, to go over the car must have been speeding so lowering the limit makes no difference. People also do not stop south bound, it's as though it is not a roundabout. At the Denbies roundabout, south bound, drivers turning into Pixham Lane tend not to indicate so it is only a matter of time before an accident involving a pedestrian happens (I have lost count of the amount of times this has happened to me, the cars have been so close I've been able to slam the bonnet of the car whilst telling the driver they should have been indicating.) It was not the SPEED that people drive at that needed addressing, it's the WAY they drive. (Please note, I am speaking as a pedestrian and a driver!)”

“Whilst justified from Denbies to Burford Bridge, once past the bend beyond Burford it's a dead straight virtually hazard free dual carriageway. No doubt that's where the scamera partnership will place their van. This will just further destroy respect for speed limits, a dangerous game. As ever nobody asks the users of the road. The first they know is when the signs go up.”

“Quite ridiculous. Whilst justified from Denbies up to the end of the bend after Burford Bridge roundabout, beyond this is a dead straight, hazard free dual carriageway quite safe for more than 70. That is inevitably where the scamera partnership will set up for maximum profit. They never enforce on the dangerous bits, no money in it.”

As ever, the people who use the road don't get asked. Under Cameron's 'localism' agenda local nimbys can insist on any limit they like and councillors, scared of getting voted out will support them every time. This will further undermine respect for all limits which is a dangerous game. Whereas before when one entered the hazardous Mickleham bends there were big 50 signs to slow you down, now there is nothing. Absolutely bonkers.”
