Adams appoints Afzaal stand-in skipper
Chris Adams has handed the captaincy to Usman Afzaal and a debut to Michael Brown as Surrey kick off their season at the Emirates ProARCH Tournament in Abu Dhabi today.
With regular skipper Mark Butcher not yet fit enough to return to match action, Adams – in his first game in charge of Surrey – has given middle order star Usman Afzaal the responsibility of leading the Brown Caps into action against a Yorkshire side featuring former England players Michael Vaughan and Matthew Hoggard.
Adams has also handed opportunities to a number of Surrey youngsters looking to push their claims for a first team slot this season, as Matthew Spriegel, Gary Wilson, Chris Jordan and Stuart Meaker all feature in his first team selection.
It is Jordan's first appearance since a persistent hip injury kept him out of action at the end of the 2008 campaign and he is joined in his return by leg spinner Chris Schofield, who missed large swathes of the last campaign after separately injuring both thumbs on different occasions during the year.
There is also a 'full' debut for returning fast bowler Alex Tudor, who signed a one year deal in October last year after impressing during a loan spell from Essex.
The full line up to take on Yorkshire at the Al Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Wednesday March 18th is:
Scott Newman
Michael Brown
Stewart Walters
Usman Afzaal (Captain)
James Benning
Matthew Spriegel
Chris Schofield
Gary Wilson (Wicket Keeper)
Chris Jordan
Alex Tudor
Stuart Meaker
All other members of Surrey's touring party will train at the neighbouring Al Zayed Academy, before resting ahead of Surrey's next matches, on Saturday March 21st against the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi and then on Sunday March 22nd against Middlesex in Sharjah.
