Aiming for promotion
DORKING Wanderers will kick off their Sussex County League Division Three campaign at home to Newhaven this Saturday and there is only one thing on Marc White's mind - promotion.
Wanderers finished fourth in the table last time out, but many believe they should be playing in a higher division and they are all set to live up to that by gaining promotion this season.
White said: "We have to hope that the best teams are at the top at the end of the season because we will be, without doubt, one of the best three teams in this league.
"People say it's surprising we're in the league we are, but it is a really strong league for that level of football. As always though promotion is the aim this year. We have ticked all the boxes we can tick really, we just need the rub of the green this year."
White believes the pressure on his side grows with every year they do not gain promotion, but keeping the squad together would be key to a successful season this time around.
He added: "There is more pressure every year in as much as teams come here and class us as a team to beat.
"We probably lost once in the last 12 games last year, we finished really strongly and pre-season has been good as well, we have played some really strong teams, we've not really played anyone anywhere near our level. Now we just have to get on with it and do the business.
"There's lots of pressure on us, but we have made a concerted decision to really take the pressure off the boys and getting it technically right and enjoying our football.
"I'm taking nothing for granted, it's going to be a long, hard, old slog."
Wanderers face Newhaven at West Humble on Saturday at 3pm and follow that with another home match with Pease Pottage on Tuesday night at 6.30pm.
