Andrews hat-trick hands Tanners victory
A STUNNING display from Greg Andrews kept Leatherhead's slim play-off hopes alive at Fetcham Grove on Saturday.
The frontman, who has been in a rich vein of form recently after his call-up from the reserves, hit a superb hat-trick to see off Ramsgate 3-1 and lift the Tanners to 11th in the Ryman South table.
In a cagy first half both sides appeared content to play the game in the middle of the park and consequently there was little action to speak of.
It was not until the second half that the game came alive and it was the Rams who struck first, somewhat against the run of play.
Simon Pettit took a throw from the right hand side, the ball flicked off the head of Rob Hill and travelled perfectly for Joe Taylor to head into the far corner.
Three minutes after they took the lead, the Rams players were left bemused by a referee's decision which could have seen them go on to take all three points.
Tom Tsangarides got away from the attentions of two Leatherhead defenders before going down under the challenge of Dan Dean inside the area. It looked like a penalty, but the referee waved away the strong appeals and the visitors still should have found the net, as the ball squirmed out to Warren Schulz who sliced horribly wide.
A huge let off for the Tanners and they made the most of it. From there on in it was the Greg Andrews show.
In the 64th minute he was denied by a combination of goalkeeper Danny Twyman and the crossbar after a beautifully struck free-kick from 25 yards.
A minute later though he was given the easiest of opportunities to open the scoring, and he did not pass it up.
Dan Dean found himself free in the Rams box and his shot wasn't the cleanest, but Twyman couldn't hold it and Andrews was there to poke the rebound home.
Twelve minutes later Andrews was hovering over another free-kick about 25 yards out. Expectation levels rose and he did not disappoint.
He caught Twyman out with a low one around the wall and into the bottom corner.
The Tanners were playing some lovely football and the game was put out of the Rams' reach just three minutes later when Andrews completed his hat-trick, courtesy of some woeful defensive play from James Gregory.
He attempted to head the ball back to Twyman, under pressure from the Leatherhead forward, but the header was weak and Andrews got there before the keeper.
He flicked it past him before thumping into the empty net from a yard out.
