Plans to build 13 homes next to a school are set to be given the go-ahead.

Sydney Simmons homes planned development next to St Giles C of E School, in Ashtead, is recommended for approval at next Wednesday's meeting of Mole Valley District Council's development control committee.

If given the green light the developer will demolish the five bungalows that were built on the site in the 1950s for people on low incomes and replace them with eight flats and five bungalows.

Seven letters of objection were sent to planners, including ones from the Ashtead Residents' Association and the chair of governors of St Giles C of E School, in Dene Road.

The objectors' main concerns are that the application is an overdevelopment of the site and out of keeping with the area.

However, council planning officers feel the application would look better than the existing bungalows on the site which they call "rather bland".

“St Giles has massive building work going on in Howard Close, directly next to the school and now it looks as though there will be more demolishing and building work being undertaken on the other side if the Sydney Simmons land application gets the go ahead. Are the Council going to recommend that demolishing takes place during school holidays to reduce pollution to the children? I don't think so. Bland dwellings are not a reason to build more. Lets hope the council insists on strict safety rules during and after the building works. Ashtead is becoming a building site - with the old Parsons Mead site, Howard Close, Sydney Simmons site, and possibly the former Esso site. Lovely.”
