Australian Olympic rower arrested after criminal damage in Egham

TRADERS in Egham were left repairing damaged shop fronts this morning after windows were smashed allegedly during a boozy night out involving an Australian Olympic rower.

Hugo's bar in High Street had its window smashed in the early hours of Thursday morning (August 2). A charity shop in High Street was also targeted.

The clean-up job came after Australian rower Joshua Booth was detained by police after damaging shop fronts in Egham High Street during a drunken night out.

The 21-year-old, who was part of a team finishing sixth in Wednesday's men's rowing final, had to go to St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey after the incident.

Surrey Police was called to Egham High Street, Egham, at around 1.40am following reports of a criminal damage incident.

A police spokeswoman said: "Officers attended the scene and discovered two windows had been smashed.

"A 21-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage.

"He was initially taken into custody at Staines Police Station and was subsequently taken to St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey for medical treatment."

Booth has been bailed to return to Staines Police Station on Friday (August 3).

During a press conference Australia's Olympic Commission chef de mission Nick Green said: "At about three o'clock in the morning, I had a phone call. We had an unfortunate incident with one of our rowers, Joshua Booth from the men's eight, and he got himself into some trouble.

"He was detained by the police last night for damage to a shop front. He was then taken to a police station. He fainted while he was there and hit his head at the police station and was taken to the hospital for precautions.

"He was released from the hospital and is now back in the rowing village, with the rowing centre, accommodation and the rowing doctor and the rowing section manager were present. He was released, as I said, and no charges have been laid.

"He has to go back to the police station tomorrow where the police will either investigate the matter and make some outcomes over investigations."

Staff at Hugo's bar confirmed the premises shop front had been damaged but did not wish to comment further.

Ahmet Gurpinav, manager of nearby Egham Charcoal Grill in High Street, said: "Hugo's had its windows smashed and the charity shop up the road had its window smashed too but we did not have any problem."
