Bookham return to winning ways
Combined Counties League Premier Division
Bookham 3 Bedfont 2
BOOKHAM returned to winning ways with a great team performance against Bedfont.
Manager Glyn Mandeville had to make changes to his starting line up with the loss of Tim Moffatt with knee problems and Rhod Davies suffering a leg injury in the mid-week defeat at Banstead Athletic. Chris Woodward had recovered from his twisted knee to return to the starting line up to partner Mark Jarman up front.
Bookham started strongly and took the lead on four minutes when Alex McGregor picked the ball up 35 yards out and scored with a wicked dipping shot that Mark Phillpott in the visitor's goal could only palm into the net.
Bedfont tried to get back into the game but the home keeper Warren Aburn was rarely troubled.
Bookham extended their lead when Jarman scored from Sam Currie's cross after a great pass out to the right wing by Russell Hartt split the Bedfont defence.
With Woodward linking up well with Jarman it only seemed a matter of time before Bookham would score again but they had to wait until right on the stroke of half-time when Jarman scored his second of the game, running onto Currie's long pass and using his strength to hold off the defender before slotting home.
Bedfont came out with more vigour after the break but most of this was aimed at the referee rather than concentrating on their own performances and one by one they went into his book.
The home side were dominant and as the visitors lost their discipline more chances went begging as Woodward was unable to keep his shot down from 12 yards out and Jarman was thwarted by Dean Banks.
Bedfont had a player sent off for an off the ball incident with Richard Gridley.
The visitors were offered an unlikely lifeline when James Griffin attempted to head the ball back to Aburn in goal, only to get too much purchase on it and watch as it rolled in for an own goal.
With only two minutes left it appeared too little too late, but in the third minutes of injury time Bedfont scored again through Marcus Fearon to give the scoreline a false impression.
Bookham host Chertsey Town on Saturday and will be looking to avenge the cup defeat of only a couple of weeks ago.
