Box Hill swimming team make a splash at Dorking meet

MEDALS and county qualifying times were in abundance as Box Hill swim team finished third overall in the annual Dorking meet.

Remembrance Sunday saw 40 Box Hill swimmers take part as the team finished on the podium from a total of 16, behind host club Dorking and Redhill & Reigate, and narrowly beating Leatherhead in fourth.

Coach Conrad Cawley was proud of his team in and out of the water, saying they showed maturity beyond their years. "There is more to racing than just diving in and blasting up the pool. A swimmer needs to pace the race correctly and the Box Hill swimmers showed that the lessons learnt in the training pool do pay off."

There was bronze, silver and gold medals for Emma Annetts, aged 11, in 100m backstroke, individual medley and freestyle respectively with a massive six second improvement in the medley for a county qualifying time.

County times narrowly eluded Matthew Brickell (13) in the 100m butterfly, where he won bronze with silver in 100m breaststroke, also smashing the county time by three seconds taking silver in the 100m individual medley event.

Bronze also came for Molly Colbert, 11, in a thrilling 100m race with an eight second lifetime best followed by a well deserved gold in 100m freestyle.

And it was another county time and silver medal for ten-year-old Will Curwen in 50m Butterfly, while a mixed day for Machayla Dewdney, nine, saw her disqualified in two of her five events but come back strongly to win the 50m freestyle with a five second improvement.

Toby Everden (13) narrowly missed a county time in the 100m individual medley with a seven second lifetime best. He had earlier gained two silvers in 100m backstroke and freestyle.

Looking both powerful and efficient Max Foster, aged ten, secured bronze in 50m butterfly adding a silver and a county time in the 50m freestyle. Schoolmate Tom Francis pulled off a great swim in the 50m breaststroke to take silver.

There were two county times and a bronze medal for fast improving Freya Johnson, ten, in 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley.

Taking part in all five 100m events within three hours 15-year-old Rebecca Lynch applied her tough spirit for two bronze, one silver and two golds in the 100m butterfly and 100m individual medley.

No improvement came in the 100m Butterfly event for Fergal Marrett, 15, but the bonus of a silver medal did.

Ella Salter and Maisy Minikin produced county qualifying times in the 50m Breaststroke.

Helena Read managed to add a County time to her tally in the 50m Freestyle with an improvement of more than five seconds.

Medals in all five events and another county time to add to his 14 already was achieved by Fin Ring-Hrubesh (14). Fin was seven seconds inside the county time while taking gold in 100m individual medley.

The Box Hill swimmers now set their focus on the Atlantis meet, November 24 and 25.
