Brave Chicks sent tumbling by strong Woking

IT was never going to be easy for Dorking on Tuesday night.

Not only did they struggle to get anything resembling a team together because of a cup rule that stated all players had to be registered to the club at least seven days before the original tie, which was due to take place on December 8, but they faced Blue Square South opposition in the form of Woking.

Before the match there were 85 places separating the two sides in the non-league pyramid, which showed the scale of the task at hand for the Chicks.

And the visitors were certainly not holding back, bringing six first-team players with them.

Despite the mountain Dorking would inevitably have to climb, they started brightly with Aidy Butler causing problems for the back line, but as is so often the case an early goal did it for them.

Woking's Charlie Moone was played through and shot goalwards only to see the ball come back at him from a Dan Coote parry. The Chicks keeper thought he could retrieve the ball, went to ground and Moone went over. The referee pointed to the spot and Billy Hussey slotted home.

That left Dorking chasing shadows for the rest of the game as the pace of the Woking attack always looked to be a danger.

Four minutes later and the lead was doubled when Joe McNerney was afforded too much space in the middle of the Dorking box and he headed a Matthew Powell cross in.

The hosts had their moments though and Butler might have got himself on the scoresheet soon after the second goal when he met a George Tedder cross first, but keeper Matt Pegler managed to see it out for a corner.

The game was delayed for five minutes when Ryan Augustine, son of manager Peter, tried a trick on the halfway line and fell in a heap. It appeared he had injured his knee and the lively Andy Miller came on to replace him.

Barely a minute later though and Woking had incresed their advantage still further.

And again it came from the penalty spot.

This time Martin Waldren sent Delano Sam Yorke tumbling and at the second time of asking Hussey made it three.

McNerney got his second of the game when he glanced a corner home just before half-time to end the game as a contest.

To their credit though, Dorking came out fighting in the second period, still trying to play their football on the floor and only conceded one further goal to their higher division opponents.

It was from one such piece of stubborn footballing play that Dorking were punished in the 67th minute.

They played a short free-kick on the halfway line, rather than lumping the ball into the box, and they were dispossessed swiftly.

There was no let up from the visiting strikers as Yorke steamed through the middle before playing the ball to Hussey, who came in from the right and rifled an effort past Coote for 5-0.

With the match having been postponed three times previously, the Chicks were just happy to have got the game played, and they should not be disappointed with the way they acquitted themselves against a team vying for promotion to the Blue Square Premier.
