Mark Butcher praised his side's "all round performance" after the Brown Caps recorded their first championship win for more than 18 months.

The Surrey skipper said every member of the team contributed as they thrashed Northamptonshire by an innings and 95 runs.

He said: "It shows we are making progress and it is very satisfying to get the win after so long.

"We asked ourselves questions in the way we did it and over the four days we had the answers.

"The conditions favoured seam on the first morning and or quicks really did well to bowl them out. Then we put on a big score and gave our spinners the opportunity to bowl last on the wicket."

Having elected to bowl in overcast conditions Surrey wasted little time working their way through the Northampton top order.

An impressive 6-36 from South African Andre Nel broke the back of the home side while Jade Dernbach also chipped in with 3-74 as the Steelbacks were dismissed for 209.

However, Butcher was quick to praise Usman Afzaal for his maturity in building a big score in the first innings which enabled Surrey to build a huge first innings lead.

The talented right-hander helped the Brown Caps escpe from a dangerous position of 94-4 to post more than 530 to create a commanding first innings lead.

Afzaal made 204, his first career double hundred, and with contributions from Ryan Harris and Jonathan Batty set up the chance of victory.

"Usman did exactly what was needed and just what we asked of him. He has been accused of, rightly so in my opinion, of making flashy 50s and 60s but not going on and making the really big scores," added Butcher.

"But what impressed me most was that everyone contributed to the win. Too many times over the past couple of seasons it's been if Ramps hasn't scored runs then there hasn't been anyone else to come in and make a contribution.

"We know we have the ability to do well and play good cricket but it is about doing that over two, three and four days and not in small bursts."

The second innings saw scant resistance from Northampton, with only former Essex opening batsman Stephen Peters offering any resistance with a disciplined 78.

Chris Schofield continued his impressive form with another five-for, as Surrey wrapped up the game with time to spare.

And Butcher has told his team that the victory will count for nothing unless they can do it again.

"The good thing about the schedule is we can take the momentum of this win right into our trip to Leicester."
