CCTV images have been released of a man wanted in connection with a double petrol station theft.

The suspect was caught on camera 'flicking a V' sign as he poked out of the sunroof of a blue Citroen Saxo which had made off without paying for fuel on August 11.

Just before 6pm the vehicle pulled into the petrol station on Godstone Hill and filled up with £35.42 of petrol and drove off.

The suspect is a white, in his 20s, of large build, 5ft 9' tall with brown hair. He was wearing a striped brown and white T-shirt and black trousers.

The same car was involved in another make off without payment from a garage on Brighton Road, Horley, on Sunday, 9 August.

On this occasion the car filled up with £45.41 of fuel before driving off.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Karl Humphrey said: "We know the thieves are using false plates on the Saxo because the registration was stolen from another vehicle in Horley and used within hours in a make off.

"The current price of fuel and the recession may make this seem like a victimless crime but at the end of the day each and every motorist will end up paying to cover the cost of these thefts.

"Therefore I would ask for people to look closely at the CCTV images and if you recognise this man come forward so I can bring such offenders to justice."

Contact police with information on 0845 125 2222.

- The Surrey Mirror understands the licence plate belongs to a Nisan X-Trail Sport.
