Firefighters have urged residents to keep their chimney's swept following the third fire in recent days.

The warning came after firefighters tackled flames at a bungalow near the Wotton Hatch pub in Guildford Road, Wotton at 9.15pm on Monday.

The home suffered damage to the roof after items in the loft caught fire.

Firefighters from Dorking were on the scene for three hours extinguishing flames and using high-tech thermal imaging equipment to scan for heat sources.

Firefighter Peter Bakker said: "The log burner had been going regularly for a few weeks. Unfortunately the chimney had not been cleaned regularly."

The blaze was the third chimney fire in as many days around Dorking.

Firefighters were dispatched to Vann Farm in Ockley on Sunday (January 10) and a home in Trig Street Newdigate on January 9.

Firefighter Bakker said: "We would warn people that it is essential that anyone regularly using a log burner or fire has their chimney swept once every six months. People should also be aware of keeping combustibles away from the chimney in the loft."

“No wonder that chimney sweeps were popular in Dickens`s day. The Victorians had a very cold time of it!”
