Chipstead to use world cup ploy for Vase game
CHIPSTEAD's director of rugby Carl Powley says he is considering making the players change their shirts at half-time in the National Junior Vase game against Crawley on Saturday.
Pinching the idea from England's World Cup winning coach Clive Woodward, he says it will help the players see the second half as a new game after letting leads slip.
"Our problem is we score a lot of points in the first half but our second half performances are not very good," he said.
"We're going out now with complete confidence, but it's only good if the other team stays down when we've gone ahead.
"Against Teddington for example they came back into the game and that's something we're trying to address, to the extent we might even change kits at half-time.
"That's what Woodward did when England won the World Cup."
The drastic action might help the High Road side keep their focus.
"It might seem ambitious, but it's a simple idea," Powley added, saying teams were allowed to go back into the dressing room at half-time if the referee was told in advance.
Some players returning from university will boost their strength for the tie, in the last 16 of the South East section. Winger Jordan Butt and Jake Howell, who played well at full-back in a 25-7 win against Old Walcountians, are among those vying for places.
Harry Bull, who has yet to play for the club, could feature, although Chips have been unable to train because of frozen pitches, but Tom Helliwell (broken ankle) is three weeks away from action.
"Crawley are top of their league," said Powley, "but I don't think their division is as strong as ours. We're looking to progress two more stages." Kick-off is at 2.15pm.

“Finally,we have a Rugby coach, who is looking at the bigger picture and I can see this club now going places.”
