KATE WARD, director of a Croydon cleaning company, had a brush with royalty recently.

Kate was one of guests at the official opening by the Queen of new premises for East Surrey College in Redhill on November 18.

Her company, Chequers Contract Services, which she runs with brothers Gary and Paul Jeal have had the cleaning contract with the college for the past seven years.

And as one of the firms closely linked with the college, she was introduced to the Duke of Edinburgh who accompanied the Queen at the opening ceremony.

Kate said: "The Duke was really funny and he was very interested to find out about the company and how many people we employ.

"I was very nervous beforehand but he really put us all at ease."

Kate was also invited to the lunch which followed the opening ceremony.

She said: "It felt a bit surreal sitting in the same room as the Queen and Prince Philip but it was an amazing experience."

Kate added: "Our staff were up until four in the morning on the day of the opening to ensure that everything was spick and span."

Chequers' involvement with the college goes much deeper than simply cleaning the building.

It has employed students from the college and uses training courses offered by the college to help staff obtain qualifications.
