TANDRIDGE District Council has hit out at the fly-tippers who closed a country road on Friday night.

Around two tonnes of rubbish was dumped on Hilltop Lane, near Chaldon.

Richard Coles, waste enforcement officer at Tandridge District Council, said: "Blocking the road here would have been quite deliberate. It stops people coming after them.

"The police came to clear the road on Saturday – we don't have an emergency call team over the weekend, and the area had to be made safe. We're successful at stopping fly-tipping in hotspots, but can't watch every street."

He confirmed Tandridge had around 100 to 120 incidents a month, probably around 10 transit van loads worth. He said: "We will be sifting through the evidence here to see if there is anything to identify where the rubbish comes from."

He added emergency road clearance was the responsibility of Surrey County Council. Anyone needing the Highways Authority in a real emergency should phone 0300 200 1003
