THE county's residents have snapped up almost 1,350 home composting bins in the past two months.

The compost bin sale, offered by Surrey Waste Partnership, is part of Surrey's aim to increase the amount of waste it recycles to around 70 per cent by 2013 and cut the amount sent to landfill.

A third of the 536,000 tonnes of household waste in Surrey could be composted, to save around £8.7 million costs each year.

Jean Pearson, chairman of Surrey Waste Partnership, said: "It's great to see so many people composting and recycling.

"Composting is an effective way for residents to reduce the amount of rubbish they throw out and I would urge as many people as possible to pick up one of the discounted bins."

The home composting bins are at a reduced price of £14.
