SAFETY measures will be trialled on a "dangerous" junction after complaints from cyclists.

Members of Mole Valley Cycling Forum (MVCF) are concerned about the junction where West Street meets three other roads in Dorking. They believe the lights do not allow time for people riding bikes from Station Road towards Westcott to get clear of the junction.

The Advertiser highlighted the issue last month, and this week Surrey County Council agreed to lengthen the time between green lights by two seconds for a period of six months.

MVCF chairman Ron Billard said: "The council has a duty to make things safe and it realises that cycling is on the increase.

"It has done the arithmetic and you can't do 150 feet in seven seconds.

"The trial really won't cost them anything and we hope it will be made permanent. It should be easily done."

A Surrey County Council spokeswoman said: "We met with members of the Mole Valley Cycling Forum on January 6 and, after discussing the options and highlighting the possibility of increased delays and congestion, we agreed to set up a trial period with an increase in the time.

"This requires rewriting of the controller configuration, which has been started and will be installed as soon as possible, certainly within a month."
