Daley defiance ensures a draw for Leatherhead & Cobham
Surrey Championship
Division One
Old Emmanuel 238-3
Leatherhead & Cobham 141-9
LEATHERHEAD & Cobham extended their unbeaten run to six games with a hard fought draw against Old Emmanuel, despite being on the back foot for much of the match.
Leatherhead won the toss and decided to bowl first. The new ball pair of Dylan Wouretz and 16-year-old debutant Elliot Daley complemented each other fantastically with Wouretz bowling with guile and Daley bowling with aggression.
LCCC made two early inroads when Wouretz had Copping caught behind for 13 and then clean bowled Naidoo for eight. This brought Dewara together with Maan and the pair began to build a telling partnership.
The Tanners change bowlers Wakefield, Dyson, Lewis-Oliver and Brewer all bowled with good control to restrict the pair, but a breakthrough wicket proved elusive.
Maan had scored a century in the two side's early season encounter and he repeated the trick finishing on 119 not out with Dewara finishing on 88. Old Emmanuel declared on 238-3 from 52 overs.
In reply Leatherhead's top order could not fire as they had done last week.
The team found themselves in trouble at 48-5 when Daley strode to the crease. He put the team's perilous position to the back of his mind as he hit a series of powerful boundaries including three big sixes.
Despite playing big shots, he was also extremely watchful against the spin on Maan and Dewara. He completed his 50, a fine effort on debut, before finally succumbing to Dewara.
This left last pair Wouretz and Lewis-Oliver to bat out the last four overs. There were a few heart in mouth moments but the pair survived to secure the draw.
Leatherhead captain George McCullough said: "Although disappointing to not win, it was important that the side did not lose against a side placed just below us in the league.
"Daley put in a man of the match display on debut and looks to be a real talent for the future."
Leatherhead & Cobham host Camberley on Saturday hoping to get back to winning ways.
