A robber wielding a baseball bat stole cash from a bank security van in broad daylight.

The van was delivering money to Barclays Bank in Queensway, Redhill shortly before 11.30am on Tuesday when one of the security guards was confronted by the robber brandishing a baseball bat.

The raider threatened the Group 4 Securicor worker forcing him to hand over a cash box containing a "substantial" amount of money.

Tuesday's raid is the second daylight robbery in six months after robbers stole cash from a security guard as he made a delivery at Lloyds Bank in Redhill town centre on September 8.

As the Mirror went to press no description of a suspect for the latest raid was available.

Inspector Con Morrissey of the response team at Reigate Police station said: "Thankfully, there was no assault and no injuries to the member of staff but the suspect then ran to a getaway car parked on the road nearby and jumped into the back of the car."

The grey Volvo XC90 4x4 then drove north on the A23 for about half a mile until it reached Lynwood Road, Redhill.

The thief and driver then ditched the Volvo, which was recovered by Surrey Police, and got into a yellow flat-bed truck and drove towards London on the A23.

Insp Morrissey said: "The Metropolitan Police were alerted and later recovered the cash box in the Carshalton area.

"Inquiries are ongoing with the Met police to identify the second vehicle and track the suspects.

"We believe there were two male suspects, the offender and his driver, but we can't be sure as the Volvo had blacked-out windows."

Investigating officer Detective Constable Kerry Akehurst said Surrey Police would be carrying out a forensic examination of the Volvo to find out what evidence the raiders left behind.

She said: "It is possible two or three people were involved in this armed robbery that has left the security guard in total shock.

"I am urging members of the public to come forward and help us out with any information they may have relating to this offence and those responsible."

Police are appealing to anyone who was in the Queensway or Lynwood Road areas who may have seen anything suspicious to come forward.

Det Con Akehurst said: "Finally, if you were out enjoying the sun in Poulter Park, Peterborough Road, Carshalton, at around midday today then I want to hear from you. The cash box was discarded there by three well-built youths so if you remember seeing them near the river bank I urgently want to talk to you. If you have any information, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, please call me because it could make all the difference to my investigation."

Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 quoting reference P10063854 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
