Don't bring back fox-hunting, local wildlife charity urges Government
A LEADING wildlife charity based in Leatherhead has urged the new Government not to repeal the ban on fox-hunting.
Wildlife Aid, established 30 years ago to care for sick and injured animals, has called for the Conservative-LibDem coalition not to reverse the 2005 ban.

CUTE CUBS: Wildlife Aid manager Simon Cowell has called for the Government not to repeal the fox-hunting ban
The Government is proposing to give MPs the chance to vote on the issue.
Wildlife Aid founder Simon Cowell said: "I was very disappointed to hear that the new Government is planning to reopen this issue.
"The Hunting Act 2004 may not be perfect but at least it reduces the scale of animal cruelty and protects at least one species.
"To repeal this law, as some members of the coalition Government seem to want, would in my view be a retrograde step."
Mr Cowell welcomed the commitment by David Cameron and Nick Clegg to introduce measures to protect wildlife and promote green spaces to halt the loss of habitats and restore biodiversity.
"This is an excellent policy and Wildlife Aid strongly endorses this aim," he said. "We will do what we can to support the new Government on this.
"Too much natural habitat has been lost in recent years and if we can halt the decline of our native wildlife species and provide better protection for them in future, that will be one of the Liberal-Conservative Government's greatest achievements.
"But the reputation of the coalition will be forever tarnished if at the same time as doing this they also bring back fox-hunting."

“Does not make the point about the ignorance of some people about nature, Karen of Croydon has no idea what a sheep or a cow even looks like yet alone being able to say what should happen in the countryside, this is a very bad act forced through by the mis use of the Parliment act by a bunch of bigots called a Labour Party, The sooner it is repealed the better for all including our farm and wildlife.”

“Karen- I respect your views but I would have thought that someone that works in wildlife rescue would surely know that a ewe is a female sheep and not a cow. Ask any farmer that keeps sheep just how much time and effort they put in protecting lambs from foxes. Fox (and dog) attacks on lambs are far more commonplace that you might imagine which is why farmers and smallholders can still legally shoot foxes (and dogs) caught worrying livestock. The dog incidents are well documented in the archives of this news site and occurred at at Titsey Hill and Merstham. One ewe attack was at a farm adjacent to Ranmore Common and the other I believe was at Bocketts Farm.”

“When a fox gets into a chicken coup, they kill any they find as they intend to come back and get each one to stash away for future dinners. The do not just kill for the fun of it.
If farmers, small holders made their chicken coups fox proof then this would not happen. Feckless owners need to take responsibility for their lack of care not the fox who is doing what is necessary to survive.
Can you provide me with the info on the cow with its udders ripped off by a fox? As someone who works in Wildlife rescue I would find this extremely strange, a fox is very small, a cow could kick it out the way, they also hunt alone unlike dogs who can hunt in a pack, one distracts while the other bites.”

“Put this into a proper perspective -Foxes are not cute and cuddly- they are wild animals and also indiscriminate killers. A fox in a chicken run will kill as many as it can irrespective of its own requirements for food. A bird of prey will only take what it needs and there lies the difference- Foxes need controlling one way or another. Ever seen the udders ripped off a pregnant ewe? Not a pretty sight - even worse a small new born lamb ripped to pieces by a fox. Too many townies have no idea of reality.”

“I really do support the Conservative-LibDem coalition government think they have bought real hope to our Labour ravaged country. But if they bought back hunting it would prove that they did not care about the opinion of the majority of the population of the UK. Fox hunting is cruel and barbaric; those who enjoy it are sadists and definitely must certainly have psychotic tendencies. I can understand a hunter shooting an animal for food, but a load of chin less hoorays rampaging through the countryside on horseback, with a pack of vicious hound in tow, after one small animal just makes me mad. It is cruelty and depravity to the extreme and has no place in any modern civilised country. Their so called argument that the ban isn¿t working is rubbish, the only time it doesn¿t work is when these evil minded sadists break the law and carry out an illegal hunt. I don¿t think the government will pander to the few evil and quite sick people, even if they happen to be the very rich few. If they do, they will certainly lose my vote and i suspect a few million others. I do hope they listen to Simon Cowell of Wild Life Aid, he of all people knows what he¿s talking about.”
