Dorking Library opens in St Martin's Walk
"EXCELLENT" and "superb" were just two of the words used to describe Dorking's new library at its opening on Monday.
The facility has been set up in St Martin's Walk following the closure of the Pippbrook House library last month.
Surrey County Council has invested in new books, CDs and DVDs, along with computers, furniture and branding for the building, which is based in three formerly vacant shopping units.
One of the first visitors, Rebecca Hamid, 61, said: "I think it's excellent. It's a pity about the old place but this looks wonderful, very bright and modern, and the staff are all very helpful."
The new library features three self-service machines, a section for teenagers to relax and read, a "cafe-style" seating area, desks for laptop use and a children's area.
Stuart Orme, who visited the library on Monday with his sons Toby and James, both aged three, said: "I think it's absolutely superb. It's great that it's in the centre of town.
"I think it's going to be a lot more accessible than the old library. I love the kids' section; they've really made a big effort."
Jenny Stone, 44, added: "It's great, it's lighter than I thought it would be. I will miss the old building but it looks like this one is going to be even better."
John Case, Surrey County Council's property, environment and stock manager, oversaw the design and construction of the new library.
He said: "It looks superb, we are really pleased with it. It is bright, modern and attractive. It was nice to start with a blank sheet and we have built in a lot of the ideas that the public wanted."
Project manager Kate Kinnear added: "We are hoping to increase our membership and use, and to get a more even spread across the age groups.
"This has been several years in the making and it is quite a nice feeling to see your vision come alive."
The new library, which has 16 staff, will host a range of events and talks over the coming months.
Mole Valley District Council is currently considering what to do with the Grade II-listed Pippbrook House, which it has pledged to keep for "civic use".

“Paul - thanks for your comment. We would be interested in speaking to you some more about this and asking the council if there's any chance of looking at putting changing facilities in. Do you have an e-mail address or phone number we can contact you on?
Cheers - Sam, chief reporter”

“It might look lovely but this new library for the 21st century doesn't offer baby changing facilities. Visiting the library with my two year old I was advised to use the public toilets at the end of St.Martins Walk. I'm not impressed. The public toilets don't have a baby changing table in the gents and they aren't the cleanest either.”
