DORKING secured the double over Mole Valley SCR, knocking their local rivals off top spot in the league and keeping their own slim chances of promotion alive.

A tight and edgy encounter was settled by two goals from the home side's top scorer Phil Page and a crucial penalty save by Dan Coote from SCR's dangerous Jay Holden.

The result leaves things very tight at the top of the division one table, with Dorking needing to win their final two games - away at Chobham on Saturday and away at Farleigh Rovers the following week - to give themselves any chance.

Mole Valley's form has been patchy of late, their rocky spell seeing their comfortable lead at the head of the division slashed going into the game, but the opening exchanges, played in wonderful spring sunshine, did enough to suggest that this was going to be a full blooded match.

The first half was probably shaded by Dorking, with Page in scintillating form once again and his opposite number Holden also looking a threat.

While SCR enjoyed good spells of possession, Dorking had the better chances as both Adrian Bulter then Adam Pero missed excellent opportunities.

James White was working overtime in the centre of the Dorking midfield enjoying a physical battle with the visitor's Dave Hartnoll.

Half-time arrived with no score, although the small number of Dorking fans will have felt that their side had done enough to take the lead. Manager Tony Webb clearly felt the same, sending his side out some three or four minutes before the second half was due to start, and whatever the manager said at the break had an immediate effect.

A defensive mix up allowed Page to round the keeper and roll into an empty net just a minute after the restart, notching an incredible 14th goal in 15 matches.

SCR redoubled their efforts and for a while the game was played at a frantic pace.

The visitors looked like they had given themselves a lifeline in a match they really had to win when Dorking full back Paul West caught Holden for a clear cut penalty. But Coote, in commanding form all game, produced a top class save to dive to his right and turn the ball away to maintain his side's lead.

Perhaps inevitably the game became scrappy as the match neared its final stages, Webb sending on sub Gary Fennessey for Pero for the final 15 minutes.

It was Fennessey's hard running that created the second and deciding goal for Dorking. The substitute chased down a long ball as the away keeper sprinted out of his goal, the two players arrived simultaneously only for the ball to spin back to Page who 30 yards from goal took a touch then delivered a perfect lob into the roof of the net with a defender on the line trying in vain to head the ball over.

The win was greeted with scenes of jubilation by the Dorking players, but Webb will know that not only must his side win the last two games, significantly improving their goal difference as they go, but others must falter if Chicks are to reach a promotion spot.

Dorking: Coote, West, Hill, Newman, White, Davis, Clayton, Donker, Page, Butler, Pero. Subs: Fennessey, Waldren, Kennedy.
