DORKING regained a certain amount of pride, despite defeat, after putting in a creditable performance against the league leaders.

They may have been beaten, but the 4-2 scoreline was a marked improvement following the worst defeat in a decade the previous week.

Chicks battled very well on a heavy pitch after all the rain, with strong performances from the senior players including captain Dan Coote, Roy Newman, Jesse Davis and Dan Clayton.

In addition, Martin Waldren got his debut goal for the club, while a full debut was given to young striker Jamie Pendrill alongside Luke Jones in the absence of Joe Loyza.

Charlie Merrick returned to the squad after a season-long absence and he had a solid game at centre back alongside the ever dependable Newman.

The game burst into life on 13 minutes with three goals in three minutes.

Camberley striker Mitch While shot home from six yards to open the scoring, but Dorking were behind for only 60 seconds as straight from the kick off, local lad Waldren surged forward from full back to shoot beyond the keeper from 25 yards to put Dorking on terms.

That was not the end of the scoring though, as two minutes later, Camberley regained the lead in unfortunate fashion.

Green's shot looked like it was travelling safely towards Coote, but the ball took a wicked deflection off a defender, leaving the keeper wrong-footed and he could only watch as it nestled in the back of the net.

After that sudden burst of activity the biggest surprise was that there were no more first half goals. Camberley were on top but Dorking fought hard to maintain a foothold in the game.

Camberley must have thought they had done enough to have put the game out of Dorking's sight on 53 minutes when Kendrick scored from close range, but unlike at Egham Town the previous week, Dorking's heads did not drop, and Chicks continued to plug away against the league leaders, despite the home side inevitably having the upper hand in terms of both possession and chances.

Their determination was rewarded when Jesse Davis's made a great run down the wing and set up Luke Jones for a strike on goal. He made no mistake, grabbing his second of the season to pull them back into contention with 19 minutes to play.

Any hopes of a miraculous comeback were put to bed though, as much like in the first period, the home side hit back almost immediately.

Finnieston scoring with a diving header just four minutes after Jones's lifeline, taking advantage of a fine dead ball delivery into the box.

The visitors almost pulled another goal back when substitute George Tedder had a hooked shot that just went wide, but the result was never really in doubt.

Camberley deserved the three points, but Dorking travelled home with pride intact.

In other news, Dorking FC's young U18 side went out of the Combined Counties League cup, going down 4-3 at Sandhurst Town on Wednesday night in a closely fought game.

Dorking: Coote, Murphy, Waldren (Elusade), Newman, Merrick, Davidson, Mollat, Clayton, Jones, Pendrill (Tedder), Davis.
