Dorking roundabout artwork to be chosen by committee
THESE three designs are competing to take pride of place on a Dorking roundabout as a lasting reminder of this year's Olympic Games.
Two artists have drawn up plans for the sculptures, one of which could be placed on the roundabout at the junction of the A24 and Pixham Lane, outside Denbies, ahead of the Olympic cycle races coming through the area in July.
The first design, by Nikki Taylor, shows a steel arch with cyclists made of resin, which would be about five metres long and three metres high.
Artist Heather Burrell has designed two statues – a pair of cyclists made of steel, and a bowl-shaped sculpture made of 500 steel "leaves".
Councillor Caroline Salmon, who is organising the project, said: "The two artists that remain have come forward with these designs. We have to re-examine the designs; it is quite open and we are trying to be very unbiased with the designs we have got."
A selection committee made up of councillors, members of Mole Valley Arts Forum, business leaders and young people will meet on Tuesday to choose the winner.
The project has been allocated £10,000 by Mole Valley District Council but the final statue could end up costing twice as much, with any extra money having to be raised from other sources.
The Advertiser's readers took to social networking sites Facebook and Twitter this week to have their say on the designs, and most chose the two steel cyclists as their favourite.
Laura-Jane Jones said: "An arch will be dangerous, youths will likely climb all over it. The leaves have little reference to Dorking.
"I appreciate the area is buzzing with out-of-area cyclists at the weekends, but I am not a cyclist and I don't think it sums up the whole of Dorking."
Paul Hook said: "The arch is by far the best," while on Twitter "TeamDarkStarMTB" posted: "It's got to be one of the bicycle designs. Let's celebrate what should be a great event at London 2012. #gocavgo"
The winning design will be put to the council's planning committee.
Miss Salmon hopes the statue will be in place by July 1.
