Dorkinians enhance promotion prospects
A TENACIOUS performance ensured Dorkinians completed the double over Chertsey at Pixham Lane on Saturday, enhancing their emerging championship prospects.
Although the scoreline suggests a tightly fought contest, in reality, the home defence rarely found themselves under sustained pressure, although they had to rely on their young keeper making an outstanding penalty save 15 minutes from the end. Dorkinians rarely relinquished control of the match, forcing numerous corners and free kicks which the visitors managed to repel until finally succumbing 10 minutes after the break.
The home side were yet again awarded a free kick, this time on halfway, which Ben Simkins lofted out to the unmarked Lee Andrew Jepson on the far right, who advanced to skilfully evade two defenders before driving past the advancing keeper.
The hosts continued their control but were unable to add to their lead before Gavin Morrison, racing out to retrieve the ball, was adjudged to have impeded the advancing forward on the edge of the penalty area.
Morrison made amends by brilliantly saving the resulting penalty, diving to his left to deprive Chertsey of their final effort.
The reserves are also challenging for promotion from Division Three (South) as the result of completing the double over the Comets with a 4-1 victory, scoring through Chris Thurgood (2), Andy Wills and Dan Channon.
