"Pothole hell" is how a pockmarked Fetcham road has been described by those who use it.

In the past week the Advertiser has been inundated with complaints about Cobham Road in Fetcham.

Cyclist Hugh Baker is one of those who contacted the Advertiser about the state of the road, which runs the length of the village and is a major route between Leatherhead and Cobham

On Fridays Mr Baker does a tandem cycle with clients from visual impairment charity SeeAbility, taking them along Cobham Road on the way to Polesden Lacey.

He said: "In many places the road is broken up right across the road. In other places there are continuous broken edges along old trenches. Now the road is so bad, even cars are having to swerve across the carriageway, narrowly missing oncoming traffic.

"Riding on the back of a tandem is frightening when the bike hits a pothole – even worse if you cant see.

Just a few weeks ago cyclist Mike Ellis was seriously injured after hitting a pothole along the A25 in Westcott.

The road was described as "appalling" by another Fetcham resident, Catherine Coles.

She said: "Despite having been patch repaired after the snow, a huge number of deep potholes have reopened along Cobham Road.

"My car went into one along the section between the Lower Road and Cannon Grove roundabouts this morning, causing a flat tyre, and no doubt further damage to my car will be revealed when I take it to a garage.

"This series of deep potholes is unavoidable as they stretch some distance across the road and with cars parked along one side of the road there is nowhere else to go. There must be many other local motorists like me who have damaged their vehicles in this way.

"In addition, it is only a matter of time before there is an accident caused by cars swerving to try to avoid the potholes."

County councillor Tim Hall told the Advertiser there were plans afoot to fix up the road surface. He said: "There are plans in our budget to completely resurface the road in the financial year starting on April 1."

“Finally after all these years, Woodfield Lane in Ashtead is being tarmaced and the huge potholes are no more. This road often turned into river after some rain, the potholes were huge and the road was a complete eyesore. After a few days of tarmacing the road, the contractors (for Surrey County Council) have decided to work at snail's pace once again. This morning (Tuesday March 16) there were five men sitting around soaking up the sun outside the van doing no work, reading The Sun, eating their sandwiches and dispensing of all their wrappers, cans of Coke, sweet wrappers all over the pavements, grass and road verges. Two hours or so later, after a trip to the doctor and the shops, the same men were sitting by their van ready to pack up for the day. It is little wonder why the pothole situation in Surrey is out of control and it takes so long for one to be filled in. At this rate, with the same contractors we will be lucky to get Woodfield Lane (lined, road markings, tarmacing completely done etc.) done before the end of the year!!!”

“I read with interest the letters about the cobham road potholes. As a local resident I too am plagued by them and many other in the surrounding roads in Surrey. When i take my son to his music lesson nearby I have to drive on the other side of the road 3 times to avoid very deep dangerous potholes. It is becoming a joke and will start causing harm soon. Not only will it damage vehicles but I find i am driving along staring at the road surface in front and not so focused on other potential hazards around me. People will start having accidents. I note, very interestingly that emails are doing the circuit now on how to make a claim when sustaining damage or injury as a result of potholes,. myabe that will make the council think!! look out for people stopping to photograph the offending holes!!!”
