An elderly man was being treated in hospital after the car he was driving ploughed into the living room of a house.

The man, thought to be aged in his 80s, was behind the wheel of a blue Toyota Carina which crashed through the bay window of a home in Glory Mead, Dorking, while its occupants were watching television.

The vehicle then reversed and smashed into the elderly driver's house on the opposite side of the road.

Firefighters, paramedics and police were alerted to the double-smash which happened at 1pm on Wednesday in Glory Mead, Dorking.

Nobody was thought to have been seriously hurt, although the elderly man was hospitalised where he was treated for shock.

“Although we dont yet know all the facts, this could be yet another case of an elderly and incapable driver not knowing when to hand in a driving licence. From what we read, I assume we will soon learn that it is an automatic drive car which elderly people seem to think is 'easier' but if they cant handle a clutch pedal, what are they doing on the road? We read of these kinds of accidents all the time. Not elderly tearaways but cars being driven through other people's garden fences, into swimming pools, across pavements into shop fronts and sometimes pyhsical collapses whilst driving on main roads. It is not just property but other motorists and passers-by who are at grave risk.especially when these crashed cars then unexpectedly lurch back again, showing complete panic and incompetence.

I am 70 and this year had to complete a form from the DVLC by merely ticking a few boxes to the effect that I am not blind, paralysed, suffering from mental illness etc. No medical examination or doctor's report. which I was expecting to undergo.. Fortunately, I am physical fit but how many 70 year olds would want to put themselves off the road by volunteering anything detremental? I think insurers should at least insist on a medical report at age 70, a full and complete medical examination at 75 and an outright refusal to insure at the age of 80. This would do the government's work for it.

    We will see...”
