Great debut gives Alcindor selection headache
Sussex County League Division One
Redhill 3
Hailsham Town 0
AFTER a superb defensive performance against Hailsham Town Redhill manager Marcus Alcindor has been left with a selection headache.
The Reds came away with the victory after goals from Daniel Morris, Leon Dussard and Kyle Morgan, but Alcindor is more concerned with who to play in defence.
With regular centre-back John Difford on holiday, debutant Olu Awonngo had an excellent game, and Alcindor admits he doesn't know who he will leave out of the starting 11 for the next game.
"Olu is a strong centre-back who looked composed on the ball, which gives me a bit of a headache because nobody who has played centre-back for me hasn't done well; I have [Charlie] Stagg, [Jon] Hogg, Difford and also young Danny Rodgers did well the other week," he said.
"Olu did brilliantly today; I was a bit worried about putting him straight into the starting 11, but if anything the only problem was he looked surprised to have so much time on the ball. There is no reason for him not to play the next game. "
Hailsham started brightly with a thunderous shot flying over the bar from Peter Cooper in the very first seconds of the game.
Tyron Sealey showed off some skill in the box to squeeze between two challengers, but eventually the ball was cleared.
Then again at the other end, keeper Chris May had a calamitous moment when his clearance smacked against a Hailsham attacker and back towards the Redhill goal, but luckily May fully recovered to save his blushes.
Chris Hubbard also had a goal disallowed for an offside decision. Redhill got their breakthrough when, after good work by Josh Bonnet, Sealey's shot was blocked but he crossed in the rebound for Daniel Morris to put away.
The Lobsters made it 2-0 when Leon Dussard was put through by Sealey. Dussard scored the goal he promised prior to the game when his shot that struck the post and went in.
Redhill looked comfortable with the two goal lead in the second half, and with the back line of Calvin Headley, Stagg, Awonngo and the excellent Tashan Nicholas holding strong the game descended into a stalemate.
It took until the 70th minute before the Lobsters got another chance on goal when Charlie Stagg's header was cleared off the line by the Hailsham defence.
Shortly after Dussard tried to repeat his earlier trick, but his shot cleared the top of Kiln Brow's evergreens. Hailsham were limited to one chance in the second half, when Cadlan O'Reilly found himself through on goal, but Reds captain May reacted quickly and cleared the ball.
Kyle Morgan added a third five minutes from time after a superb ball from Darrell Ditchburn.
Redhill: May, Nicholas, Headley, Stagg, Awonngo, Hubbard (Elliott), Dussard (Ditchburn), Bonnet, Hudson, Morris, Sealey (Morgan).
