The Grumpy Mole at Inn on the Green, Tadworth
The Grumpy Mole conservatory restaurant and terrace at the Inn on the Green in Tadworth is a stylish and sympathetic addition to the pub.
People were eating outside when we visited. However, we chose to dine in the stylish dining room which attracted us with its leather chairs, modern black and white and mirrored décor, fresh linen cloths, gleaming cutlery and sparkling glasses.
While perusing the menus we tried the house white – a worthy Sauvignon Blanc at a reasonable £12.95 a bottle. We did note that the well thought out list also includes impressive Rioja Reserve and Verve Clicquot.
A new Light Summer menu available at lunchtimes and from 5pm to 6pm features a wide selection of substantial mains and salads, but for those needing a quick gastro-experience, has also included tortilla wraps, hot paninis and oven-baked potatoes, baguettes and sandwiches with various fillings and garnishes.

Homemade quiches, homemade fish pie, homemade cottage pie and old-fashioned bangers and mash also appear on this appetising list.
Available at all times is the a la carte which features a wide and interesting range of starters, main courses and desserts.
For starters I decided on the mushrooms which were pan-fried in garlic and butter and topped with locally produced blue cheese from Norbury Farm. This was mouthwatering. I savoured the juice from the delicate mushrooms and accompanying sauce which was readily mopped up with slices of chewy fresh baton, also made in the restaurant's kitchens.
My companion deemed her choice of crevettes served in a garlic, lemon, butter and parsley dressing and served with rustic wholemeal, equally tasty.
We both opted for a fish main course although there was plenty of meat temptation including the slow-cooked minted lamb steak in a rich red wine, tomato and onion gravy.
However, my friend was glad to be lured to the fillet of seabass and prawns. This was topped with a piquant white wine, cream and dill sauce and accompanied with vegetables of choice. In this case new potatoes and a fresh and colourful salad.
"This is simply wonderful", was her comment.
I chose the salmon with asparagus spears. With this I indulged in some perfectly crispy fries and a selection of vegetables which included peas, mange tout, and ribbons of carrot and celeriac, the latter sporting a hint of fragrant coconut.
Two well-cooked and attractively presented meals that both of us marked 10 out of 10.
For dessert, I was impressed to see the sticky toffee pudding came directly from Cartmel – the Cumbrian originators of the dessert. My friend is still talking about it!
I was tempted by the home-made meringue with red berries, fruit coulis and clotted cream. The meringue was chewy on the inside, crisp on the outside and ate well with the solid clotted cream and fresh fruit. A dream of a dish to finish with.
The Grumpy Mole gets busy so book beforehand for weekends - it has most Saturdays evenings booked five weeks in advance.

“We visited on Saturday 13 March for an 80th celebration lunch. The atmosphere was superb as was the food and service. The lorders were taken and the unch was very efficiently served. There were 40 attendees and I don't think there was one complaint. The ages of attendees ranged from mid 30s to mid 80s and everyone was happy with everything they were served. At no time did we have to ask for anything, water was constantly topped up and we were asked if we would like anything extra. The warming log fire in the entrance was especially welcoming as it was a little brisk on the day we visited. The conservatory room was very comfortable. The rest of the restaurant seemed very busy as well and although I cannot comment on the sort of service or food the other people attending if it was anything like the food we were all served I don' t think they would have any complaints either. The choices were very good and the wines were superb. All in all a very good celebratory lunch and I would recommend the Grumpy Mole to anyone wishing to use their facilities. We do not live locally to this pub/restaurant but if we did we would certainly use it again. Top marks to the whole team and a big thank you for a very enjoyable meal.”

“Dear Mr Palmer, please accept our apologies for your visit last Friday. We do try very hard to give good service and good value for money, as all our food is prepared to order. We are all human, and obviously this vist, we got it a little wrong, and will have a word with the waiting staff accordingly. Please make yourself known to us as we would like to apologise in person and endeavour to rectify things.”

“This was the first time i have been there this year.
Great before, recommending it to everyone but this visit on Friday 27/11/09 was such a let down! what has happened?? bad service, not offered drinks when we sat down, no communication, food average and we were given a sweet menu and left with it for 45 minutes! we got up,paid the bill (no tip) and left - be warned.”

“This is a review? A couple of old ladies having a nice lunch out? Afraid of meat? Don't pretend it is a review if you just ask a couple of old birds if the free meal you bought them was good”

“Sorry, forgot to mention that the menue together with the "Specials" meant that both of us could find something to our liking. I am very fussy with my starter but not here. Well done Grumpy Mole!”

“We have a family get-together once a month and were looking for something different. We found it! My wife and I decided to try out the Grumpy Mole and boy did we like it. The family is booked in and we are sure the evening will be a great success. Food - great! Service - great! Atmosphere - great! If you have not tried it - do so. You will not be disappointed believe me.”
