The new leader of the council has announced plans to review waste and will spend £1 million battling speeding.

Cllr Andrew Povey (Waverley Eastern Villages, Con) has been elected the new leader of Surrey County Council (SCC).

And he has put waste disposal, speeding and social work at the top of his agenda.

He said: "We want to demonstrate that we are listening to our residents and I want to ensure they are getting maximum value for money.

"We have found a lot of residents are concerned about speeding. We are going to allocate the sum of £1m, for one year initially, for equipment, the training of staff, and more community speed watch schemes."

Sources close to the Advertiser have revealed that the council may also be set to move away from using incineration as a way to get rid of the council's waste.

Cllr Povey said: "We will set ambitious targets for recycling and build on the successes we and borough and district councils have already achieved in increasing recycling rates. We now have the opportunity to look at reducing or removing our need for Energy from Waste in Surrey."

Cllr Povey said the review was currently underway and the results would be announced between mid to late autumn this year.

Cllr Povey also refused to discuss what will happen to the former Clockhouse Brickworks site, in Capel.

The Horsham Road site was earmarked by Surrey County Council to house a mass-burn incinerator, but protesters fought off the plans.

Sources have since revealed that Surrey County Council, who have already spent millions on its plans for the site, still have to buy the site for £4.2 million.

He said: "I am not able to discuss it because it is subject to commercial negotiations."

He also plans to provide 50 bursaries of £1,500 to undergraduates studying social work at university, in the hope it will bring more of them into county.

Cllr Povey is also set to give himself more power over certain decisions including the future of the green belt and schools.

He said: "The council has limited powers, but where the council does have powers in these matters the decision would fall to me."

Cllr Povey has been on the council for 16 years and used to live in Brockham.
