JELLY Babies appear to have played a key role in Chipstead's victory in the fourth round of the National Junior Vase on Saturday.

But director of rugby Carl Powley was modest about the masterstroke to solve Chipstead's penchant for flagging second half performances this season.

It seemed to do the trick, with the hosts scoring their winning try midway through the second half against Crawley in the fourth round tie at The Meads.

Powley was delighted by a comment on the Surrey Mirror's website, www.thisissurreytorday.co.uk, about the club. "Finally, we have a rugby coach who is looking at the bigger picture and I can see this club now going places", read the entry from James Caan.

The comment was made on the story about the players changing their shirts at half-time, treating the second half as a new game as Sir Clive Woodward did with England's World Cup-winning team.

The story, Powley said, led to a few worried faces among the opposition. Powley said the sugar boost could have been the key to victory, but could not be certain.

He said: "We're looking at different things about our second half performances and when the sugar would have kicked in after 20 minutes that was exactly the time the lads were going mad and scored a try."

Chipstead were unable to train in the week building up to the game because of the bad weather and Powley said the ground was "frozen" on the day.

He resorted to pulling the players in early for a training session before kick-off.

Victory put Chips in the last eight of the South East section of the Vase, with the four regional winners across England going on to contest semi-finals and the carrot a final at Twickenham.
