A DAREDEVIL pensioner will fulfil a lifelong ambition by leaping from a plane.

Mike Ormerod, 72, is skydiving this summer to raise money for the Reigate and Redhill YMCA.

Despite his age, Mr Ormerod still teaches around the world, and says he has no intention of letting opportunities pass by.

The former South Park and Woodhatch councillor is also learning to swim in preparation for his first triathlon, and is in training for a marathon.

He told the Mirror: "I always thought I would like to do a skydive. I've never done anything like it before in my life. I am a bit apprehensive because my knees are a bit dodgy, but it's very exciting.

"I like being active and I feel I need to be active.

"I want to keep my health going for as long as possible by taking regular physical activity.

"I enjoy the activities and the company."

On May 28, Mr Ormerod will jump from a plane, two miles high, at Beccles Airport in Suffolk. Accompanied by his instructor, he will freefall for 50 seconds at around 120 mph.

Last year, Mr Ormerod took part in every event hosted by the YMCA, including three marathons and two bike rides.

He remembers his worst challenge, a trek up Snowdon a few years ago, when conditions were so bad, the climbers were forced back down after only two hours.

Mr Ormerod of Furze Hill, Redhill, became involved with the YMCA seven years ago.
