DORKING Wanderers moved up into fourth place in the league with victory over Pease Pottage, despite not having a recognised goalkeeper on the pitch.

Regular keeper Josh Lennie was still out injured, and reserve team custodian John McBride was involved in an accident at work, meaning right-back Dean Milton donned the gloves and was protected sufficiently by his defenders to only concede one goal.

The hosts had been on a good run of form going into the game, unbeaten in the last five, but they came up against a determined Wanderers outfit.

The visitors dominated the first half possession, but they continued to lack that cutting edge as the scores remained goalless at the break.

The first goal came soon after the interval though and it started with the makeshift goalkeeper.

He thumped a ball forward, it was flicked on twice, by Matty Evans and then Shane Jones before falling into the path of Lee Smith who made no mistake.

Milton had not had a thing to do in between the sticks up until then as he was well guarded by his defence, but he was picking the ball out of his net five minutes later, though he thought he was fouled in the build-up.

The referee waved play on though and the Pottage striker had the easy task of tapping home the equaliser.

The visitors continued to have all the possession following that setback and Jerome Beckles had a golden opportunity one-on-one with the keeper to regain the lead, but he spurned it.

It did not matter though as Wanderers were awarded a penalty soon after and Shane Jones dispatched it with confidence.

Manager Marc White was delighted.

He said: "We played our best football of the season on Saturday, I don't remember us playing as well as that before. It was nice, flowing football and we retained the ball really well in midfield and a makeshift defence played really well so Dean Milton didn't have to make any saves.

"We were really, really good because they were a strong side and if that's a sign of what we can do next season then we will be in a good position."

Wanderers play away at Forest on Saturday, followed by a trip to Ifield on Tuesday.

Wanderers: Milton, Hirrell, Dunne, S Duffell, Beard, Beckles, Jones, Hamsher, Davis, Smith, M Evans.
