DORKING Wanderers claimed fourth spot in the Sussex County League Division Three with victory over Uckfield.

It has been an "inconsistent" season for Wanderers, who had high hopes of earning promotion at the beginning of the campaign, but contrasting displays from one week to another in the middle of the year cost them dearly.

That said, they went on a good run of seven games unbeaten at the end of the season to consolidate fourth place.

League top scorer Lee Smith was first on the scoresheet in the 50th minute, but a dubious penalty had the home side level once more.

But 10 minutes from time Smith bagged his brace to finish it off.

Manager Marc White was pleased with the performance and the end to the up and down campaign.

He said: "We have finished fourth, it all came down to Saturday and it was a very comfortable 2-1 win.

"Inconsistency has hurt us and when we've had some continuity we've looked unbeatable and that's shown in the seven games unbeaten at the end of the season."

Overall though, he is disappointed with how the season panned out.

He added: "I'd be lying if I said we were not disappointed with it, but the back end of the season has been really enjoyable because we've got a bunch of players there who have stayed and been injury-free.

"It's really disappointing to dominate so many game and not get points, that's what's ultimately cost us."

White is already planning for next season and revealed that he had signed a number of players up already.

He said: "We have re-signed Jerome Beckles, Louis Freitas, Lee Smith, Kevin Burgess, John Hamsher, Shane Duffell and Matty Evans and we're currently speaking to others within the club and outside to build a squad early for next season, so we are in good stead.

"We are more prepared on the pitch and off it than ever before."

Wanderers: Lennie, Hirrell (Alcoe), Milton (Dunne), Beard, S Duffell, Beckles, Davis, S Jones, Hamsher, M Evans, Smith.
