LEATHERHEAD Cricket Club's Sunday development side stormed to an emphatic win in the final of the Surrey Trust Shield, by comprehensively beating Alleyn & Honor Oak by 89 runs.

The young Leatherhead side were inserted on a green seaming wicket and got off to the worst possible start when Adam Dyson was surprised by one that popped off a length, and was comfortably caught at first slip.

That brought Simon Roberts to the wicket and along with Michael Wakefield, they began to start building an innings.

The pair put on 41 before Roberts was bowled by a good length delivery, having played maturely for his age.

Captain Matthew Roberts strode to the wicket in confident mood and began an aggressive assault on the Oak attack. The positive intent shown by Wakefield and Roberts pressurised the fielding team and Roberts brought up his 50 with a flurry of sixes before being stumped on 57.

Wakefield continued to punish the bowlers and with the support of Jon Lewis Oliver he scored a brilliant 100 and helped set Oak a tricky target of 229 in 36 overs.

Oak lost Smith (0) in the second over to the bowling of Daniel Leach. Two senior players were now at the crease, the pair put on 30 for the second wicket before Bevan (17) was caught behind off the bowling of Tom Gamble.

Not long after another dismissal off the bowling of Jack Gamble left Alleyn & Honour on 37-3. A partnership was needed and the fifth wicket partnership put on 74.

Tight bowling from 14-year-olds Alex Waterman and James McGachie kept the pressure on, both were unlucky not to grab a wicket. The partnership ended when the introduction of Adam Dyson had George (41) stumped by a beautiful spinning delivery.

That wicket led to the collapse of Oak when they went from 105-3 to 140 all out with wickets from Adam Dyson (4-17) and Jon Lewis Oliver (3-17) and Nick French getting three catches and two stumpings.

Leatherhead were comfortable winners of their first Surrey Development title.

Leatherhead club captain Matt Joblin was thrilled at how the focus in developing young home grown players has paid off. He said: "Matt Roberts has led a talented side of vibrant young cricketers and it's a testimony to our dedication in investing in the future. We are all thrilled."
