Leatherhead's opening stand proves fruitless as the heavens open
Surrey Championship
Division Two
Leatherhead & Cobham 157-1
Camberley DNB
RAIN halted Leatherhead's impressive start to their match with Camberley, set-up by an century opening partnership between Stephen Cush and Conan Brewer.
Camberley had beaten LCCC earlier in the season so the Tanners were anxious to put matters right on Saturday. Camberley won the toss on a green wicket and with rain threatening a shortened game, unsurprisingly chose to bowl first.
Preparation for the match could not have started much worse as teenage star Adam Dyson went down with a freak ankle injury in the warm ups. With Dyson unable to bat, Brewer stepped up to open with Cush. The pair started watchfully but punished any loose balls with consummate ease.
In distinctly average conditions, the bowlers toiled away as the opening batsman matched each other run for run. They both passed 50 and the Tanners had reached 137-0 from 25 overs when the umpires offered the fielding side the option of going off.
Although conditions hadn't really deteriorated, staring down the barrel of a large score it was no surprise that Camberley chose to leave the field.
Tea was taken early in an attempt to limit the loss of time. When the sides re-emerged, it was decided that play could resume much to the joy of Cush and Brewer. A short passage of play ensued where Brewer (72) was on the end of a poor lbw decision, before the rain ultimately put paid to the game.
Cush finished on 69 not out and looked well set for a big score.
It was a shame that LCCC's best opening partnership of the season ultimately proved fruitless. With nine wickets remaining, the side would have been confident of amassing a large total and Cush looked well set to complete his maiden century on UK shores.
Attention now moves to Old Midwhitgiftians on Saturday where the side look to get back to winning ways.
