Leatherhead back to winning ways
LEATHERHEAD returned to winning ways with an impressive display away to a struggling Egham side who will be playing their cricket in Division Three next year.
Asked to bat first on a very wet wicket, Leatherhead soon lost openers Peak and Dyson with only 17 on the board. A slow start meant the away side sent in Matthew Roberts in an attempt to try to up the run rate and change the momentum, however when he was caught for six, Leatherhead were in trouble at 40-3.
Joblin (47) and French came together and added an impressive 96 for the fourth wicket, before the skipper was run out after a mix up.
Bonellie (18), Gibson (22) and Woutersz (11) all added important quick runs at the end of the innings. French went to his maiden league hundred, and was finally run out for a well made 101.
Finishing on a total of 230, Leatherhead knew they had a chance, however the wicket was drying out and proving very good to bat on.
In reply Egham started cautiously but built a steady opening partnership. Woutersz (0-21) was very impressive with the new ball bowling with excellent control and Wakefield (0-24) added pressure from the other end.
Although openers Risk (26) and Reece (54) started well, they were never allowed easy runs and Leatherhead continued to make things challenging.
The required rate began to climb and with the score on 64, Bonellie (2-32) got the all important breakthrough dismissing the Egham skipper for 26.
Sinclair (35) joined Reece and added 29 before Bonellie dismissed the dangerous overseas player Reece (54) with a trademark full toss. At 93-2, the game was very much in the balance and with Tindall at the crease, who had played so devastatingly in the first game, it was a pivotal phase of the season.
Enter the spin twins of Roberts and Dyson to change the game. Roberts (4-48) had Tindall bowled round his legs for 15, and Leatherhead knew they had their noses in front. No other partnerships followed and the two spinners ripped through the middle and lower order bowling with vicious spin and bounce and mixing up their pace and flight nicely to deceive all the batsmen.
Egham were finally dismissed for 177. A fine all round performance from Leatherhead, who secured their position in Division Two for 2011. They play Chessington in the final league game of the year this weekend.
