Martin says batting let him down
Surrey Championship Premier Division
Banstead 158
Weybridge 159-3
Banstead slipped to the bottom of the Surrey Championship Premier Division after this heavy defeat at the hands of Weybridge.
The East Surrey side's batsmen were unable to build a total that would be anywhere near competitive and gave their bowlers little to defend in the second innings.
Only Rory Burns (30) and a spirited cameo down the order from Philip Reeves really troubled the scorers as Banstead struggled against Weybridge's well drilled attack.
And any hopes skipper Jak Martin may have had of seeing his side fight their way back into the match were dashed by an opening stand of 77 between Seren Waters and Abeed Janmohammed.
The eight overs bowled by openers Adam Clarke (0-30) and Tristan Caviet (0-27) were not good enough while only Mark Houghton (2-36) ever really threatened.
Martin admitted his side had simply failed to deliver with the bat but insisted his team would get it right in the coming weeks.
He said: "We simply didn't score enough runs, to be fair to them they bowled well but our batting line up made some poor shots.
"Phil helped us get up to something like a respectable score but then our bowling let us down and once they got off to a flying start there was no way back.
"Their openers played some big shots but I was disappointed with how we used the new ball and it was vital we had a good start when defending such a low total. We didn't get it in the right areas enough and their batsmen punished us.
"But I have a lot of faith in this side and am convinced that we will start to climb up the table over the next few weeks.
"We've put in some good performances that have almost got us wins but Saturday was a bad day."
