Merstham U17s give club second title of season
MERSTHAM U17s B have been crowned Epsom & Ewell League Division One champions.
They did enough to take the point they needed against Epsom Athletic, the only side capable of catching them, and give the club their second title in two weeks, the U17A side taking the premier league crown.
They were formed at the start of the season and had not played together before this campaign.
Merstham struggled to find their rhythm. The defence of Harvey, Carder, Magee-Wood and Willis were called upon to keep Merstham level, working tirelessly as they have all season.
Epsom broke the deadlock when a superb direct free-kick struck the crossbar and rebounded over the line.
They increased their lead and Merstham's task looked impossible. But Merstham have battled well all season and seem to thrive on added pressure.
A fantastic first-time volley from Josh Young gave them hope. Merstham seemed to find a new belief and when Merstham were awarded a direct free-kick 25 yards out, Tom Scott stepped up to score an amazing goal to level.
With time running out Epsom again snatched the lead, but Merstham's never say die attitude kicked in and Connor McArther's sublime cross was met by Scott to score such an important goal.
John Searle pulled off an amazing save to deny Epsom and give Merstham the point they needed.
Merstham U14s C secured at least a runners-up spot in the Epsom & Ewell Youth League Division Two, with a 9-6 win over Epsom Eagles B.
The Moatsiders need three points from their last two games.
They drew first blood when the hard-working Daniel Chapman slotted home from close range. Fellow striker Zach Ward made it two, calmly slotting home.
Epsom pulled two back before the interval.
A good half-time team talk was needed. Keith Fisher and Gerry Beck told their troops to stop trying to outplay them as individuals, go back to playing as a team, as they have done all season.
An early second half brace from Ross Knight stunned the visitors.
Ward added his second, giving Fisher the chance to change their normal 4-4-2 formation to a 3-4-3 system. This seemed to invite Epsom back into the game.
Further goals from Josh Doherty, Ashvyn Luckoo, Chapman and a second half brace from top-scorer Ward secured a rewarding home win.
Merstham Girls U12s lost 5-1 at table toppers Bedfont in the Surrey County Women's and Girls League. Devlin unleashed an unstoppable volley to bring the game back to 2-1 for Merstham's goal.
