Merstham road to be closed for road repairs for second time in three months
A MAIN shopping street will be closed as road repairs are carried out – for the second time in three months.
Traders and residents along Portland Drive in Merstham will have to walk to their shops and houses next month as Surrey County Council suspends parking and blocks off the street for resurfacing.
But shop owners, who lost trade while resurfacing works were originally carried out in November, were left fuming when they discovered the latest work is only being done because the job was not done properly in the first place.
Paula Osman, from nails and tanning salon Cuticals, said the lack of passing traffic and available parking was devastating last year.

"It was a nightmare for us the first time," she said.
"We lost a lot of business because people couldn't stop so they drove on and went somewhere else.
"We even had a couple of people cancel appointments because they couldn't stop."
Portland Drive boasts a food store, restaurant, dry cleaners and a takeaway among its shops. All were affected last year as a result of the roadworks.
But Surrey County Council has now announced the work will need to be redone as the new surface is too slippery.
Arul Reaj, from J.S. Convenience Store, said: "We don't get so many customers during the work; the people come from round here but no one from further away.
"I haven't heard when the work will start yet – the council don't think of us when they do this."
The work is listed on the council's website as "remedial" and as being due to start on March 8 for four days. It will be carried out from 9am to 4.30pm with the road closed and diversions in place.
According to the online notice, no work will happen during the weekend, but Surrey County Council was unable to respond before the Mirror went to press.
