He said: "It was completely out of the blue. He was living alone so we don't really know the full story.
"We would just like to get hold of him.
"It is not out of character for him to go on a drive and be gone for a couple of days, but not for this long."
Mr Barnett is described as white, about 5ft 8in tall, of medium build, with short blond hair.
His son added: "We know he went to Cornwall as a kid, but not to that particular area.
"The police have been doing their searches quite thoroughly, and it has just been a waiting game.
"We are just taking each step at a time, taking each bit of information and digesting it, looking for connections, looking for possible reasons and where he could be.
"We are kind of stuck at the moment – it has been two weeks."
Mr Barnett, who works in advertising, is divorced and has three children – Ben, 26, James, 24 and William, 21.
Ben said: "It's difficult just not knowing what the reasons are. It is a bit of a shock. We are looking for any explanation.
"We are staying quite matter-of-fact about things – we have to go on the facts we have been given.
"Jumping to conclusions is something we don't want to do. There are so many different things that are potential causes."
