New-look Banstead take big scalp
Combined Counties Premier Division
Banstead Athletic 3
Chertsey Town 1
A CHANGE of personnel and formation helped Banstead take the scalp of Chertsey, who reached the last 16 of the FA Vase on Saturday.
For the first 10 minutes Banstead were trying to find their feet against fourth-placed opponents.
It didn't help when Sol Patterson-Bohner was booked after 10 minutes for not retreating at a free-kick.
Chertsey had a shot from Steve Goddard that keeper Brady tipped over.
On 29 minutes Alistair John was shown a red card for lashing out at Steve McNamara, who was also sent off. It seemed to help Banstead going down to 10 men because on 35 minutes Moriarty scored from 35 yards with a sweet shot that was fumbled by the goalkeeper.
On 45 minutes Banstead's Zak Graham had the ball in the net after some good work between Quintin and Patterson-Bohner.
Banstead made a substitution before the second half, Sinclair on for Sammut. On 57 minutes he scored with the outside of his boot from distance.
Chertsey pulled one back on 63 minutes when Banstead were caught out. Dave Tarpey crossed for Andy Crossley to slot into the net.
Paul Norris, Banstead's manager, said: "I made a few changes tonight to freshen things up after Saturday's poor performance.
"I need players ready to play whenever I call on them. The formation was 4-2-3-1, Zak Graham and Sol Patterson-Bohner caused problems, their hard work and determination and quality in the final third paid off.
"No-one would have given us a chance after Saturday's game to get three points from Chertsey." he said. "Prendergast and Zak Graham were superb on Saturday, tonight Zak and Ross Chalke led the line," he added.
