New striker nets a Tidey return for Horley boss Rennie
Combined Counties League Premier Division
Horley Town 2
Raynes Park Vale 1
Horley recorded their second successive 2-1 win, thanks to goals from Ben Herdman and Darren Tidey.
Boss Ali Rennie was happy with the win over 19th-placed Raynes Park.
"I was very pleased with the result and the performance," he said. "We set out with three fast players up front and to really attack Raynes Park.
"We got forward well and it led to lots of half chances. Sometimes the final ball was poor, but we passed well and got in behind them."
Horley, who are five places above their opposition, were good value for their win and Rennie believes it was down to good goalkeeping.
"Stewart Devlin did really well on Saturday," he said. "He pulled off a couple of vital saves that stopped the final score being 2-2.
"Jerry O'Sullivan also did well getting forward, and the front three caused Rayne Park problems."
Rennie hopes Horley's good form can be rewarded at Molesey on Saturday.
"Molesey have been on a good run, but we are improving" Rennie said. "We are feeling confident and I'm hoping to get a win so we go into our Challenge Cup match against Guildford on Tuesday on a high."
Horley began in a 4-3-3 formation, Adam Pullen, Jamie Risebrow and recent signing Tidey in the attacking roles. The hosts were immediately on the attack down both flanks and Park keeper Giddings was kept busy.
Horley's front three caused problems and some great link play down the right hand side with Jerry O'Sullivan pushing forward from full-back saw a series of chances created from his crosses.
But some resolute defending and the lack of a quality final ball denied Horley the lead.
A corner by Luke Raggetti on 40 minutes was met by a thumping header from Pullen. Although the ball hit the underside of the bar, Tidey knocked the ball home to put Horley 1-0 at half-time.
Horley were slow out of the blocks in the second half but after another Raggetti corner, the ball was headed back across goal by Pullen and this time Herdman stabbed the ball home.
Horley should have been comfortable at this point, but after a handball in the penalty area, the visitors cut the deficit from the spot on 60 minutes. That seemed to unsettle Horley, until Risebrow crashed a shot off the crossbar on 70 minutes. Raynes Park started to throw players forward and began to cause Horley's backline problems.
From one attack, Devlin brilliantly saved a great downward header at his left hand post.
Opportunities were, by now, coming at both ends but Horley managed to see out the game.
