SCOTT Newman's Surrey career appears in tatters after he was told he has no future at the Oval.

The 29-year-old opener was made available for loan at the end of last week after showdown talks with the club's cricket manager Chris Adams.

In a similar move popular all-rounder James Benning has been told to look for another club as former Sussex captain Adams looks to remould his playing squad.

Speaking exclusively to the Advertiser Newman described the club's decision as "hurtful" insisting he had no idea what he had done wrong.

He said: "I was left out of the last few Twenty20 games but assumed I was just being rested because we were already eliminated and they wanted to try some young players.

"But I knew something was wrong when I got a phone call on the Sunday telling me I was going to be left out of the Middlesex match at Lords.

"The following day I had a meeting with Chris Adams and he told me that I had no future at the club. He said to me that I wouldn't be involved at all for the rest of the season and would have to 'move mountains' to ever get a game for Surrey again."

Newman, who has scored more than 6,500 first class runs at an average of more than 40, felt the decision to axe him was unfair

"I felt that I had answered every question of what they wanted me to do after I was left out of the side at the start of the season. I've lost the weight and am getting fitter all the time.

"Apparently the decision isn't based on my cricket performance but he [Adams] thinks I'm a bad influence around the dressing room.

"I obviously disagree."

Newman, who has 18 months left to run on his contract at the county, said he did not want to just sit around collecting his wage packet.

He said: "I love playing cricket and want to be playing. It's been two weeks since my last match and it hurts.

"Surrey are my team and I want to be playing for them but if that isn't possible then I have to put myself first and think about my career.

"My management team are trying to sort something out for me at the moment and we'll see what happens. I feel quite shocked at what has happened as I've had some good innings for the club this year."

James Benning has also been told his future lies away from the Brown Caps.

The 26-year-old former England U16 international confirmed he was looking for another club but said he couldn't say anything more at the moment.

He said: "It is all a little fresh at the moment and I can't really say anything more.

"There is nothing really deeper than that. I have been released to go on loan and I am looking to get out there and play more cricket."
