A BICYCLE officer arrived on a crime scene within minutes to arrest a man on suspicion of criminal damage and theft.

Ashtead Neighbourhood Specialist Officer PC Jason Woods was patrolling the area on Tuesday when a report of a car being damaged was received just after 1.45pm.

A brick was used in an attempt to smash the driver's window of a car parked in Barnett Wood Lane. The brick scratched the window and the attacker left the scene.

PC Woods arrived swiftly and spoke with a number of witnesses who provided a good description of the suspect.

A man matching the attacker's description was then arrested in Kingston Road, Leatherhead.

A wallet containing £165 in cash was also stolen from an insecure vehicle also parked in Barnett Wood Lane.

A 41-year-old man from Streatham has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
