Surrey Ladies League Division One

Oxted 4

Wanderers 2

Having secured promotion already, Oxted maintained their unbeaten run with a 4-2 win, thanks to a Mel Mercer brace.

Oxted's top scorer Amelia Lewis was first to break the deadlock when she drove the ball to the baseline and beat the keeper.

Wanderers did not stop pushing, and not long after Oxted had taken the lead they managed to slip one past keeper Ellie Hepburn after a scramble.

A strong midfield line of Penny Carolyn, Mercer and Lisa Nightingale kept the play in the attacking half. Lewis drove the ball up the right wing and found forward Vicky Mackay, who slammed the ball home.

A goal early after the restart again drew the scores level.

Forward Kat Barnard made run after run to break up the Wanderers press and make the space needed for Oxted to continue to attack.

Kat Barnard's effort was rewarded when a goal line scramble saw her shot saved off the line by the keeper's back stick, giving Oxted a penalty flick. Captain and Waitrose player of the match Mercer stepped up to take the flick and drove the ball through the keeper's legs.

Sam Dobson and Suzanne Davis, backed by the consistently good saves of Hepburn, controlled the Oxted defence to ensure Wanderers were not allowed to pose any serious threat

Mercer won the ball in the middle of the pitch, and slotted the ball through to Katie Barker, who took it around the defender. Barnard jumped on the ball and beat the keeper.

This weekend Oxted travel to face a strong Cheam side.

Oxted: Hepburn, Mercer (c), Dobson, Davis, Axcell, Nightingale, Carolyn, Lewis, Mackay, Barnard, Barker, Smyth.
