Oxted's batting collapse proves costly
Surrey Championship
2nd XI Division Five
Dorking II 154
Oxted & Limpsfield II 84
A shambolic batting display saw Oxted throw away a winning position after bowling beautifully to dismiss Dorking.
Oxted invited the hosts to bat first and got off to a good start when Ed Earl took the first wicket in the second over courtesy of a David Staines catch.
However Dorking's number three Lewis Davies looked a different class from ball one and he scored a fluent 41 before Earl (2-35) induced an edge to keeper Greg Miller.
Dorking made steady progress before Jonny Mastin struck with the aid of a good catch from Jack Dennison.
From here Oxted started to take more control of the game and slowed the scoring whilst also taking wickets at regular intervals.
Next to strike was Emmins, quickly followed by a fine diving caught and bowled for Mastin (2-32) as he removed the remaining Dorking opener.
From 98-5 Dorking rallied to 134 but when Emmins (2-19) took his second the O's knew they were in to the tail and were targeting dismissing the home side for 160 or less.
Michael Adamson brought himself into the attack and together with Gajan Gandhi bowled tightly, Adamson (4-13) removing the last four batsman.
As Oxted went into the break they felt confident as they had a deep batting line up, but had to be mindful of the varied bounce of the wicket and also aware that Dorking would come back at them strongly.
That is exactly what the league leaders did as Davies made his second, and most telling impact on the game. Bowling a good line and length and moving the ball at good pace Davies removed both openers to leave the O's reeling at 11-2.
When fellow opener Young also removed the O's number three and four they found themselves 12-4 in the sixth over and with three ducks in scorecard.
Singleton and Earl then looked to rebuild, but with the score on 24 Singleton was unlucky to fall to the last ball of Davies's first spell and the scoreboard read a sorry 24-5 from 11 overs.
Mastin joined Earl at the wicket and the pair batted sensibly taking the score to 42 before Earl was out to the Dorking skipper's left arm spin. Mastin (10) was bowled by a super delivery before the score could be added to.
Dennison and Miller batted well together ticking the score along until Dennison was out to the most unlucky dismissal possible, run out backing up, when looking comfortable.
Emmins was next in the he and Miller carried on the sensible approach taking the score from 69 to 82 and also inducing the first signs of frustration from the home team until Miller (25) tried one quick single too many and was run out.
Two more runs were added before the final wicket fell and the O's were all out for 84 in 38.2 overs, a disappointing performance given the opportunity they had given themselves at tea.
