Oxted season goes down to the wire
Fullers League
Division One
Oxted & Limpsfield 166
Chobham 36
A phenomenal bowling performance from Oxted & Limpsfield completely demolished a shell-shocked Chobham side at Master Park to keep alive their hopes for promotion.
They will now need to win their final game and hope other results go their way to have a chance of making it back to the Surrey Championship.
Having won the toss Chobham's Van Zijl and Chaplin settled into a tight line and length from the first ball, and with the ball swinging and moving off the seam, scoring was difficult.
Stuart Fletcher was first to go, mistiming an attempted hook shot, and top edging it back to the bowler.
Mike Wood got a good ball and was caught at second slip to leave Oxted struggling at 12 -2.
Richie Adamson and Sam Curtis then had to dig in, grind out a partnership and see off the dangerous opening attack.
They had advanced the total to 43 in 21 overs when Adamson (19) eventually played one too many with his pad, and was lbw to Van Zijl.
Barath then played around a full ball from Cheeseman and was bowled.
However, Curtis and Gordon Boxshall built the partnership of the day, adding 65 in the next 16 overs, sensibly mixing careful defence with positive shots whenever the opportunity presented itself.
Curtis reached his third league 50, but had just started to accelerate the scoring against the spinners when he picked out a fielder on the deep mid-wicket boundary and was caught for 63.
Boxshall (25) also fell caught in the deep at 136 in the 45th over as the scoring rate accelerated, but Ned Lack (24 in 22 balls) and the remaining batsmen scampered some quick ones and twos to lift the score up to 166.
In reply, Chobham's South African opener Riaan Minnie fell early as Will Singleton (2-6 ) struck with two quick wickets.
At 17-2 in 10 overs, the scoring had hardly threatened the Oxted total, but it then got even slower as 13 maidens were bowled overall
Cheeseman (8) top scored with just two scoring shots, both played nicely off his legs, but embarrassingly for Chobham the wickets tumbled with virtually no other attacking strokes.
Curtis pocketed three straightforward catches at second slip, including two off a grateful Dave Paisey (4-22) and Boxshall (3-3) tied the lower order in knots after replacing the promising spell from Singleton.
Every decision taken by skipper Ian Barney paid off, and Lack (1-3) took a wicket with his first ball as he replaced Paisey.
Unfortunately for the O's, both Battersea Ironsides and Godalming continued their winning ways, and Oxted stay in fourth spot in the promotion race with 10 wins. The final game this weekend is at Battersea, and Oxted's promotion hopes will still rely on one or more of the other results going in their favour even if they beat the league leaders.
