Patel shines but is unable to help Warlingham secure victory
Surrey Championship
Division Three
Chessington 231-9
Warlingham 140-6
Nihal Patel made an impressive debut for Warlingham's first XI taking 3-34, but was unable to force a victory as conservative batting saw Wars settle for the draw.
Having restricted Chessington to 231, Wars were reluctant to chase a total which was 50 runs more than their previous highest this season.
Patel had come into the attack replacing Wes Lind, who had his first wicket-less game for the club, just as Chessington were trying to force the pace.
His accurate spell included the wickets of Alex White whose 48 runs provided the backbone of the visitor's innings and Niall Stewart who made an elegant 64 at a run a ball.
Chessington's running between the wickets was excellent throughout and exploited Warlingham's mediocre fielding, but they delayed their declaration until just after half-way leaving the home side chasing 232.
This target set would be Warlingham's highest score of the season and had to be scored in five fewer overs, however, they began positively with first Nigel Field and then Divian Patel scoring at the required rate in a first wicket stand of 57.
After Divian Patel was out for 28, Shane Patel and Alex Pizzey briefly kept the momentum going but they didn't last long enough and two further middle order failures left the home team on 121-5 with only 13 overs left.
Warlingham's remaining batsmen, not being noted for much in the way of belligerence, decided that discretion was the better part of valour and opted for the draw.
Chessington's bowlers kept up the pressure, but only had one more success.
Field finished on 54 not out and Nihal Patel made an un-flustered three not out as the innings closed on 140-6 leaving Chessington with the winning draw.
In the Surrey Championship second XI division two Warlingham lost by eight wickets to Guildford having been bowled out for 71.
Guildford's bowling, with several players being rested from their first XI, was far too good for Warlingham who were summarily dismissed for a paltry 71, Masood Bashir top-scoring with 20, although to their credit they lasted for nearly 33 overs.
Guildford had no such desire for to make the game last longer than necessary and knocked off the runs in 13 overs for the loss of only two wickets, both taken by Shailesh Amin.
